Abstract

The properties of bitumens are improved by adding thereto copolymers of vinylidene compounds with other copolymerizable compounds. Examples of vinylidene compounds are vinylidene chloride, allylidene chloride and a -chloro-acrylonitrile, and suitable copolymerizable compounds are vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, methyl acrylate, ethyl methacrylate, styrene, diolefines, e.g. butadiene and chloroprene, and olefines, e.g. isobutylene. The copolymers may be pretreated, e.g. chlorinated, before mixing. The mixing can be effected in solvents, preferably those common to both the bitumen and the copolymer, such as solvent naphtha and methyl cyclohexanone, or the bitumen is first made fluid by heating. Fillers, pigments, plasticizers and stabilizers may be incorporated. Specifications 602,851 and 604,412 are referred to.
