Abstract

603,579. Converting. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and JACOBSEN, B. B. March 14, 1945, No. 6447. [Class 38 (ii)] In a rectifying circuit, which may be used for giving a steady deflection of the beam in a cathode-ray tube proportional to the A.C. voltage, a number of A.C. sources are each connected to the input terminals of one or more rectifying voltage doublers, the output terminals of which are in series so as to provide a combination of rectified voltages, each proportional to the voltage of one of the sources. Fig. 1 shows two voltage doublers 5, 6 supplied in parallel from an A.C. source 1, 2, through blocking condensers 7, 8 and 51, 52. Each consists of two parallel branches containing rectifiers 11, 12 and rectifiers 13, 14 in. series with resistances 15, 16 shunted by condensers 17, 18. Their output terminals 19, 20 are connected to the output terminals of a third voltage doubler 43 in voltage opposition thereto so that the D.C. voltage across output terminals 3, 4 is the sum of the outputs of 5 and 6 less the output of 43. Voltage doubler 43, which comprises two parallel branches consisting of rectifiers 47, 48 in series with resistances 49, 50 shunted by condensers 51, 52, is fed at 2, 45 from another A.C. source which may be of different voltage and frequency from the first. Different combinations of outputs may be arranged. In a modification, voltage doublers balanced with respect both to input and output, Fig. 2 (not shown) may be connected singly or in groups across a number of different A.C. inputs, the outputs being connected in series as desired. The rectifiers used may be of the copper-oxide or selenium type, diodes, or amplifying valves.
