Abstract

Protective coatings are produced on aluminium or its alloys by treating with a hot aqueous solution of the chlorite, chromate and carbonate of an alkali metal e.g. sodium. The temperature of the solution is preferably between 200 DEG F. and its boiling point, whilst the chromate radical may be supplied in the form of an alkali metal bichromate. The aluminium or alloy surface is preferably first cleaned with a hot solution of trisodium phosphate or caustic soda followed by dipping in strong (50 per cent or more) nitric acid. Examples of the treatment applied to aluminium, alloys of aluminium with manganese, magnesium or chromium are given in which the preferred solution consists of 5 gm/litre sodium chloride, 5-6 gm/litre sodium chromate and 20 gm/litre sodium carbonate; whilst in treating copper-containing aluminium alloys the preferred solution consists of 4-16 gm/litre sodium chlorite, 4-5 gm/litre sodium chromate and 12-16 gm/litre sodium carbonate.
