Abstract

601,135. Pulse modulation circuits. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. July 27, 1945, No. 19333. Convention date, July 29, 1944. [Class 40 (v)] In a pulse width modulating system, a tuned circuit is recurrently shock-excited to produce a series of undulations, the tuning being varied by the modulation voltage to vary the width of the undulations and the derived pulses. Pulses from a generator 1 shock-excite the tuned circuit 2, the diode 3 damping out the wave train after the first positive half-cycle. A modulating voltage from source 5 applied to the reactance valve 4 causes the tuning of the circuit 2 to vary, changing the width of the first positive half-cycle. This undulation is fed. through a high-pass filter 6 to a pulseshaping amplifier 7 and to a differentiating and inverting circuit 8 to produce narrow pulses coincident with the leading and trailing edges of the first pulse. Where the input pulses are of short duration, they may be converted into a saw-tooth wave, Fig. 3 (not shown), to prevent the generation of undesired waveforms by the trailing edges. Specification 600,284 is referred to.
