Abstract

600,687. Coated fabrics; compound sheet materials; coating webs. GATES, W. E. F., DAVISON, J. W., WORRALL, G. W., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Oct. 3, 1945, No. 25682. [Class 140] [Also in Group XXVIII] Fibrous sheet materials are coated by applying thereto molten polythene or polythene compositions by means of a heated spreader bar, which may be a fixed roller. The polyethylene compositions can include natural or synthetic uncured rubber, polyisobutylene, waxes, resin, bitumen, dyes, pigments, oxidation inhibitors and mineral fillers such as finely divided calcium carbonate or titanium dioxide. The porous fibrous sheet material may be paper, fabrics woven or knitted from fibres of natural or regenerated cellulose, cellulose derivatives, synthetic resins, asbestos, slag or glass and, if desired, filaments or metal wires. Laminated sheet materials can be produced by pressing by heated rollers the freshlycoated porous sheet material onto another substantially dry sheet which may be coated or uncoated. The second sheet may be paper, cardboard, metal foil, woven or knitted fabric. The fibrous sheet materials may be dried by heating before the molten polythene is applied and may be cooled immediately after by passing between cooled rollers which may be plain or engraved. Two successive coatings of low and high viscosity may be applied. The fibrous backing may be rehumidified after coating, e.g. by passing over a steam jet. The apparatus may take various forms as shown, 1 being the sheet material to be coated, 2 a bank of molten polythene which is spread by a heated spreader bar 4, and 5 a support or supports for the fibrous sheet. The forms shown in Figs. 8 and 9 have no support 5 since the coating is applied on both sides, and in Fig. 2 (Comp.), the fibrous sheet is pressed against the bars 4 by its own tension. Outer sheets 19 may be pressed on by heated rollers 20. The coated and laminated materials may be used for heat sealable wrappers and cartons, drinking cups and plates, developing dishes for photography, insulating and measuring tapes, gaskets, waterproof clothing, tarpaulins, tents, machine driving belts, curtains, lampshades, playing cards, semi-stiff clothing, pipes and tubes. Specifications 377,983; 536,379, 536,380, [both in Group IV], 551,339, [Group III], 585,186; 586,767, 586,768, [both in Group III], and 600,065 [Group XXVIII], are referred to.
