Abstract

600,265. Joints. THOMPSON PRODUCTS, Inc. March 7, 1945, No. 5683. Convention date, Oct. 16, 1944. [Class 65 (ii)] A ball-and-socket joint comprises a stud having a ball end 11a and a shank 11b, a first rubber ring 12 having a deformable liner 14 secured thereto seated around the upper portion of the ball end and a second and similar ring seated around the lower portion of the ball end, the liners having inner walls which in their free state engage the ball end substantially only along circular lines on opposite sides of the plane lying normal to the axis of the shank and passing through the centre of the ball end, a housing receiving the rings and loading them normally to the axis of the shank to deform the liners, and a closure member for the housing loading the rings axially of the shank to deform the liners further into full bearing engagement with the ball end. The inner surface of a liner may be toroidal in shape, being generated by the rotation about the axis of the stud of an arc of radius R<1>struck from the periphery of a circle C<1>-C<1> lying in a transverse plane beneath the centre C of the ball end of radius R, or it may be any regularly curved shape lying between a conical surface and a true spherical surface. The liners may be of fabric impregnated with thermoset resin:
