600,181. Charging batteries. CRYPTON EQUIPMENT, Ltd., SQUIRE, R., and WHELLER, A. G. Sept. 27, 1945, No. 25124. [Class 38 (iv)] In a battery charging equipment wherein upon the battery being charged to a predetermined voltage a thermal or other voltage relay sets in motion a timing device which after a predetermined time automatically switches off the charging current, the voltage relay, by closing its contacts, also moves a change-over switch to reduce the charging current by tap changing, either on a choke coil or like currentreducing - device in the primary circuit of a transformer used for charging the battery through a rectifier, or on the primary winding itself. When the battery b, charged by transformer c<SP>1</SP> and rectifier a, reaches a voltage determined by the adjustable resistance h, the thermal type voltage relay g energises the coil q of the tilting mercury type change-over switch p and the winding s of the motor operating the timing device. The change-over switch p reduces the charging current by changing the connection to the tapped choke coil e (or a tapped resistance) in the primary circuit of the transformer c<SP>1</SP> or by changing primary tappings on the transformer ; also this switch, by its contacts r, closes a maintaining circuit for windings q and s. Charging continues at reduced rate until the timing device opens the micro-switch m either to interrupt the supply directly or open the main contactor f. Charging is re-started by again setting the timing device for the desired time, which re-closes switch m.
