Abstract

600,075. Thrust spoilers for jet-propelled aircraft. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT), Ltd., ROBSON, A. R. D., and JOHNSTONE, A. P. March 22, 1945, No. 7320. [Class 4] In.an aircraft gas turbine fitted with a jet delivery pipe, the jet is neutralized when desired by a number of deflector plates normally out of the fluid stream passing through the jet pipe, but movable into the stream to divert at least part of it whilst still maintaining its general direction of flow, the diverted stream being guided to outlets from which the fluid is ejected in the required direction to produce a jet spoiling effect. Triangular openings 4 in the walls of a jet pipe 1 are normally closed by triangular flaps 3 hinged to the walls at 2 and adapted when turned inwards to deflect the fluid stream on to curved deflectors 3a which reverse its direction. The flaps may be wholly outside the jet pipe which may be displaced longitudinally to permit of their being turned through the space so formed to divert part of the fluid stream into an annular passage surrounding the jet pipe and leading to the curved deflector plates. In another form, a bulletshaped casing 28, Fig. 7, provides, with the jet pipe 29 an annular passage for the fluid stream and hinged flaps 30 on the casing 28 are turned into the stream, deflecting part of it into the interior of the casing, the end 28a of which may be displaced rearwardly by an electric motor 33 to provide a gap for the exit of the diverted gases. Cooling air enters the casing by a hollow strut 45.
