Abstract

<PICT:0599856/III/1> <PICT:0599856/III/2> A machine for coating cardboard cartons, containers, leatherette &c., using adhesives, paints, varnish, waxes, paraffins, lacquers, cements or wax-carbon solutions, applied at normal temperatures or heated or cooled to the proper working temperature, comprises a hollow, rotatable stencil-drum 2 adapted to hold in its interior a quantity of the material, means, shown as a roller 51, totally or at least substantially submerged in the material at the lower part of the drum to force the material through the stencil, and means, shown as a roller 34, for retaining the article against the outer surface of the drum. The drum 2 is in two sections comprising a flanged cap fixed by screws to one end of a hollow cylinder closed at the other end, has a plain portion 4, Fig. 7, and a design portion 5 and is supported on two pairs of rollers 10 having flanges to hold the drum in position. The rollers 10 are mounted on shafts 12, Fig. 4, connected by a chain 13 and drive the drum by friction, one of the shafts being driven through the clutch 15. A hood 3 is provided over the drum. The roller 51 is carried by brackets 53 fixed to a cross-bar 54 slidably mounted in slots in the side frames of the machine and pressed downwardly by springs. An opening 50 is provided at each end of the drum to receive the paint, and a deflector disc over each opening prevents the paint from splashing through the openings. The paint may be heated by electricity, steam, hot water or oil or cooled by means of a fluid. As shown, fluid from a tank heated by an electric heater controlled by a thermostat is circulated by a pump through pipes immersed in the paint. The space between the drum and the hood may be heated or cooled by a pipe connected to the circulating system or by an electric heater 73 controlled from the thermostat.
