Abstract

Artificial filaments, films and like materials are obtained by shaping a fused composition comprising a synthetic thermoplastic fibre- or film-forming polymer and a solvent medium therefor in such proportions that the composition is fusible at a temperature which does not substantially exceed 100 DEG C., but which is solid at temperatures up to about 35 DEG C., and setting the shaped materials by cooling. The polymer may be a linear condensation polymer such as a polyamide. The fused composition may be shaped by extrusion. The solvent may be phenol, a cresol, a xylenol, a naphthol, resorcinol, catechol, quinol, orcinol, formic acid, acetic acid, or a halogenated fatty acid. Mixtures of solvents with non-solvents such as toluene, xylene, or ethyl benzene may be employed. The proportion of solvent may be high or low provided a composition of the specified properties is attained. Dilute solutions, which are subsequently concentrated, may be obtained directly from the process of preparation of the polymer. The polymer in flake form may be treated with a solution or dispersion in water or other known solvent from which the polymer takes up the desired amount of solvent. For making filaments or films the composition may be fused during passage through a narrow tube and it may be extruded under pressure applied by a gas or liquid, or by a pump. The composition may be extruded at a temperature slightly above the fusion point. The shaped materials may be passed through a heated inert gaseous atmosphere heated in the region of the shaping device to a temperature of the order of that of the shaped composition. After a short travel in the hot gas, the materials may be passed through inert gas at a much lower temperature sufficient to permit completion of the setting of the materials. If desired, a cool liquid may be used for completing the setting of the materials. Such liquid may be sprayed on to the materials or on to a forwarding roller. Alcohols, ethers, esters, hydrocarbons, chlorinated hydrocarbons or aqueous salt solutions may be used. Solvent may be removed from the set materials by washing with water, benzene, toluene, xylene, petroleum ether, or aqueous caustic soda solution. The set materials may be subjected to stretching. The compositions may contain additions of softening agents, pigments, dyes or cellulose derivatives. Such additions may be made in the reaction mixture before polymerization. In an example, hexamethylene diammonium adipate and phenol are heated for several hours in an inert atmosphere. Adipic acid is added and the mixture is heated for a further period. The composition is led through a heated narrow tube and a gear pump to a conical jet. The extruded filaments pass through hot air and are then sprayed with a cold solution of sodium chloride. Specifications 540,967, 541,238 and 599,668 are referred to.
