Abstract

599,601. Thickness-gauges. BIRMING- HAM SMALL ARMS CO., Ltd., and SMYTH, C. N. Oct. 12, 1945, No. 26660. [Class 37] Relates to gauges for measuring the thickness of non-magnetic coatings on magnetic bases wherein the poles of' an A.C. electromagnetic probe are applied to the coating which then forms an air gap in the magnetic circuit formed by the magnet and the base. According to the invention, the probe magnet is embedded in a material, e.g. polystyrene so that the probe may be used in an electrolytic bath without damage to the probe by chemical action. Fig. 1 shows the electromagnet 1, 3, the enclosing polystyrene 5 forming a handle at 7 and providing only a very thin coating over the pole faces 9 so as to have substantially zero effect on the reluctance of the magnetic circuit. The probe is connected in an A.C. bridge circuit, Fig. 2 (not shown), with a similar probe, the poles of which are magnetically connected. The bridge output varies in correspondence with the coating thickness being measured and may be indicated directly on a milliameter actuated through an amplifier. The magnet may function alternatively as a transformer.
