Abstract

599,368. Vibration-dampers. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. March 6, 1943, No. 3688. Convention date, Nov. 16, 1939. [Class 108 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXIII] A vibration-damper is arranged in a cavity in a propeller blade and includes a member 50 loose in the cavity. The member 50 retained against the action of centrifugal force by rollers 62 disposed between arcuate tracks 54, 58 in the member 50 and a seat 56 supported by the blade; the dimensions of the parts being chosen to give the members a preselected rate of vibration at a selected speed. Lateral blade vibrations cause the loose member to move laterally over the rollers and hence axially against the action of centrifugal force. Member 50 comprises portions 48 and 52 of rectangular and hexagonal sections respectively, the former being supported in a cage 42 comprising cylindrical end portions connected by strips and secured against rotation by pins 46. Perforations may be provided in member 50 and the blade cavity may be filled with liquid to damp movement of the member. Balance weights 72 may be secured to the cage 42 by a bolt 70 which may be screwed inward to abut member 50 and prevent movement thereof. The damper may be applied to a variable-pitch propeller as described in Specification 416,255, [Group XXXIII]
