Abstract

In a process for separating diolefins from mixtures of C5 or C6 hydrocarbons containing also acetylenes by contacting with ammoniacal cuprous salt solutions, a solution is used containing at least 1 gram mol. per litre of copper and at least 0.5 gram mol. of ammonia or an amine in excess of that required to solubilize the copper, the amount of solution being sufficient to dissolve only the acetylenes. A C5 or C6 cut may be extracted with aqueous acetone, for example, to give a diolefin, for example isoprene, containing 1-2 per cent of a -acetylenes which is then treated by the process, for example with a cuprous solution of 3 molar copper, 4 molar ammonium acetate, and 7 molar ammonia content using 1 volume of solution to 2 of hydrocarbon. For isoprene extraction, suitable temperatures are 70-150 DEG F. Extraction of a C6 diolefin such as methyl pentadienes-1,3 may be effected in liquid phase at 0 DEG C. The solubilities of diolefins and acetylenes in cuprous solutions of various composition, including cuprous acetate-ammonia, cuprous sulphate - pyridine, and cuprous chloride - monoethanolamine solutions, are given. The solution containing acetylenes may be heated to polymerize the latter, if desired after adding to a solution used in butadiene separation according to the process of the parent Specification. Piperylene, and 2,3-diimethylbutadiene are other diolefins specified.
