Fabrics are rinsed after laundering with a bath containing a composition comprising a major proportion of magnesium sulphate or chloride and a minor proportion of boric acid. Soap residues are thereby converted into insoluble magnesium soaps and are dispersed to such a degree that a substantial portion of the magnesium soap so formed is capable of being flushed from the fabrics when the rinse bath is withdrawn. When chlorine bleaching agents are used during the laundering, small quantities of sodium sulphite may be added to the rinsing composition. A typical composition consists of 50-75 per cent of magnesium sulphate, 22.5-47.5 per cent of boric acid and 2.5 per cent of sodium sulphite.
