Abstract

599,067. Drilling paper piles. DUNLOP. S. (Kamket Corporation). May 3, 1940, No 7990. [Class 31 (ii)] In apparatus for drilling a row of holes near the rear edge of a pile of papers to receive a spiral loose binder, during which drilling the rear edge of the pile is located against a concave stop 167a, Fig. 25, and the side edges between inclined stops so as to be inclined, whereby when the pile is straightened out the holes are configurated to the turns of the spiral fastener, the paper piles are fed one by one at A, Fig. 1, vertically disposed with back edge downward to holders B on an intermittently moving chain conveyer C, the holders having a concave bottom strip to give the rear edge of the pile a convex outline and a vertical abutment roller 19 co-acting with a cam 26 to tilt the holders to about 45 degrees to the vertical when they reach the left-hand end of the inner run of the conveyer, whereupon transfer arms 70 operate to push the piles laterally out of the holders B over a similarly inclined guide-plate E on to an inclined longitudinally extending table part F and above another intermittently moving chain conveyer G, each pile being engaged by an inclined pusher-plate H and eventually located against an inclined stop 168 on a central part 90a, 91a, constituting a carriage I, which then rises to lift the pile against the row of drills 207. The transfer arms 70, shown in Fig. 16, are normally lowered out of the way of the pile holders on the conveyer C and are operated by a cam 88a, Fig. 2, lever 86, link 85, lever 83 and bell-cranks 78, which by reason of spring-grip pins 74b on slide 74 engaging the slide rails 75 first cause the transfer arms 70 to be lifted to the dotted line position, Fig. 16, and then, when the spring- grip pins 74b give way, allowing slide 74 to move along rails 75, the arms 70 move in the direction of the arrow and carry the pile over the guide E on to the table carriage I. The latter is raised to effect the drilling operation by a cam lever 200 and link 198 having a slotted connection thereto so that before acting to raise the carriage, the lever 200 moves a plate 209, Fig. 25, carrying a number of shouldered bushes 208 guiding the drills 207 and located over other bushes 206 on the part 90a of the carriage I so that the pile of papers is tightly clamped by the bushes around the holes to be drilled before the drilling operation. The drills are rotated by flexible shafts 249 within flexible tubing 249a and driven each by its own pinion from a large control wheel, all located in a casing 259 and driven from a motor 27. After each pile is drilled it is moved forward by its pusher plate H, the stop 168 being lifted out of the way by a cam.
