Abstract
597,890. Controls for fluid-pressure power devices. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Dec. 19, 1944, No. 25499. Convention date, Jan. 24. [Class 103 (i)] In a braking system comprising a pedal operated master cylinder 12 which controls high and low pressure conduits to a power cylinder 24 the piston of which actuates the auxiliary master cylinder piston 22, a valve 82 is provided which admits fluid at high pressure directly to the power cylinder working space when the speed of operation is such as to cause a considerable. pressure drop between the inlet valve chamber and the power cylinder. As shown the high and low pressure fluids are atmospheric air and vacuum respectively. Chambers 38, 40 of the tandem piston cylinder 24 are permanently in connection with vacuum through passage 66 and conduit 34. Chambers 44, 42 are interconnected by orifices 48 and the hollow sleeve 50 and are in communication through a conduit 52 with the valve chamber 54 which in the position shown is connected to vacuum through a central orifice in the diaphragm 60, openings 62 in the member 64, passage 66 and the conduit 34. Operation, of the self-lapping inlet valve 72 and the exhaust valve 70 by the piston 58 controlled hydraulically from master cylinder 12 charges the valve chamber 54 with air which passes through the conduit 52 to chambers 44 and 42 so that piston 22 in auxiliary master cylinder 20 is moved by thrust rod 26 rigid with the pistons 28 and 30 to operate the brakes. In rapid braking a fast application valve 82 admits air directly to chamber 42 when the pressure difference between chambers 54 and 42 exceeds a predetermined limit. Space 88 is connected through a conduit 86 to chamber 54 while space 92 is connected through a conduit 90 to chamber 42. When the difference between these pressures acting on diaphragm 84 is sufficient to overcome the spring 112 the poppet 96 is opened to admit air directly through passages 104, 102 and 98. The valve 82 is closed during brake release.
