Abstract
In making household or laundry soaps, as distinct from toilet soaps, in bar or tablet form by rapidly chilling molten soap of about 60-65 per cent. total fatty matter (briefly called 63 per cent. soap) so as to solidify the soap within a few seconds, and thereafter, without subjecting it to a drying operation, plodding the solidified soap, one or more steps are taken to increase the degree to which the soap mass is compacted during plodding. Such steps may be taken prior to or during the plodding operation. The molten soap may be prepared by any soapmaking process particularly by the fitting or the curd processes. The rapid chilling may be effected by passing the molten soap over a cooling drum, by spraying the molten soap into unheated air, or by spraying the molten soap on to a cooled surface. The additional steps may comprise working the solidified soap prior to the plodding, such as by milling, or by a refining treatment such as described in Specification 380,820; plodding at sub-atmospheric pressure; or passing the extruded soap bar into an extension tube added to the nozzle of the plodder, the increased resistance of which serves to build up the pressure in the plodder. The plodding is preferably effected under de-aerating conditions, such as in the presence of carbon dioxide. Full working details are given in a number of examples of the process using specified known fats and fatty oil mixtures to prepare the starting molten soap.
