Abstract
597,156. Refuse consuming &c. furnaces. STEVENS, A. H. (Nichols Engineering & Research Corporation.). July 10, 1944, No. 13144. [Classes 51 (i) and 51 (ii)] In a furnace for the drying and incineration of refuse, sewage sludge and the like or for the treatment of ore, the charge is fed through a tube 40 on to the upper of a series of superposed hearths 16, 17, 18 over which it is moved and stirred by rotating rabble arms 19 towards outlets 24 through which it passes on to a mass of burning material below, the gases from which pass upwardly over the hearths to an outlet flue 72 communicating with the main flue 70 leading from the combustion chamber 26 below. If desired dried or partly dried material may be removed from one or more of the hearths through passages such as 41. Dampers 71, 73 control the passage of gases through the conduits 70, 72. The rotary shaft 27 carrying the rabble arms 19 is made hollow for feeding refuse to be incinerated directly on to the hearth 45 of the combustion chamber which may be surrounded by an annular grate 46 or a number of dumping grates. At the centre of the grate is arranged a rotary conical perforated grate member provided with perforated arms 65 supplied with air from a conduit 50. Specification 463,037 is referred to.
