Abstract

597,151. Generating combustion products under pressure. BONVILLIAN, C. A., BRIERLY, R. C., and LETVIN, S. Sept. 6, 1943, No. 14560. Convention date, March 13. [Class 51 (i)] [Also in Groups XIII and XXVI] In apparatus for generating combustion products under pressure, for use in gas turbine systems, vapour generators or superheaters, fluid heaters or for the jet propulsion of aircraft, comprising a combustion chamber into which fuel and primary air are projected, secondary air being supplied from a surrounding air space, the chamber is formed by a number of co-axial conical members fitted with outwardly directed radiating members arranged longitudinally. In the form shown in Fig. 2, the apparatus comprises an outer casing 25 of generally ellipsoidal shape in which is mounted a number of truncated conical members 116, 120, 121, 122 and 123, the latter having an outwardly flared part 124 and the members being arranged so that there are gaps 26 through which secondary air is supplied from a surrounding space, the members being provided with radial longitudinally disposed fins 126 ... 129. The member 116 is fitted with a flange 117 to which is secured a second flange 119 carrying a conical member 118 into which the flame is projected, an observation tube 131 being provided. The conical members are under the influence of spring pistons 52 to permit expansion and the gap between the members 122, 123 may be adjusted by screw and nut devices 134. In another form, the outer casing 25, Fig. 3, is cylindrical with a conical discharge end and is provided with a jacket 48 through which a medium to be heated is passed thus serving as a waste-heat boiler, a superheater, or smoke producer as well as for cooling the casing 25. The jacket may be divided by a partition 51 which may be perforated and serve as a support or solid to divide the jacket into compartments which serve separate purposes. The radial vanes 39 are arranged in the gaps 26 between the conical members 27 some or all of which can be adjusted longitudinally by a rack 41 and pinion 44. Fig. 7 shows a similar form in which the outer casing 60 at one end provides a jacket 48 leading by a passage 60<1> to the space outside the conical members 27 whereby a medium introduced at 61 into the jacket is brought into direct contact with the combustion gases. In other forms the vanes on the conical members are separated by ring spacers or the conical members may be replaced by a helix. In a further modification the conical members overlap concentrically, the spaces between them leading from different supplies. Specification 597,205 is referred to.
