Abstract

59 7, 0 5 0. Automatic gain control. FARNSWORTH TELEVISION & RADIO CORPORATION. April 24, 1945, No. 10335. Convention date, July 1, 1944. [Classes 40 (iii) and 40 (v)] An automatic gain control system is designed so as to maintain constant the peak-to-peak value of the signals. The invention is described in its application to a television amplifier in which the output from the image dissector (not shown) is amplified in an electron multiplier 1 having load resistors 6, 7. The desired image signals are taken across resistor 7 and fed through the cathode-anode space of an impedance valve 9 to a broad band amplifier 10 and the further stages 17. Resistance 6 is shunted by a byepass capacity 8 and is connected to the grid of valve 9. In this way the impedance of valve 9 is made to vary inversely with the average value of the image signals received from tube 1, and so the average value of the instantaneous image signal voltages received by valve 10 from resistance 7 through impedance valve 9 is kept constant. Alternatively, the impedance valve 9 may be arranged in shunt across load 7. In that case the polarity of the applied control voltage is reversed. Blanking and synchronising signals from source 18 may be applied in negative polarity through condenser 19 to the grid of valve 9, an isolating resistance 20 being provided.
