597,037. Etching glass. TRIGGS, W. W. (Alncin, Inc.). Nov. 22, 1944, No. 23231. [Class 100 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIII] A glass, light-transmitting optical device, such as a lens is made by shaping a stock piece of barium-containing glass to the required contour, and treating the shaped surface in a bath containing a mixture of hydrofluoric and phosphoric acids in which the amount of the latter predominates over that of the former, the proportions being preferably 5 : 1 by volume, whereby any light-screening substances deposited on the surface during moulding or grinding are removed. The glass is moulded, blown, ground or otherwise shaped, e.g., by a rough shaping process followed by grinding by means of a bonded, fine-grain abrasive wheel shaped complementary to the required contour. or, where a light-diffusing surface is required, by using a loose abrasive. The shaped glass is then immersed in the bath and is agitated or alternately removed and rinsed with fresh water and re-dipped in the bath until the glass surface is clear of deposit. A reflecting coating may be applied to one of the optical surfaces of a lens treated as above, to provide a mirror or catadioptric device. Specification 563,760 is referred to.
