Abstract

A copolymer of 40-80 per cent of acrylonitrile with at least one ester of an itaconic acid of formula CH2=C(COOR1).CR2COOR1, where R is hydrogen or an alkyl radical of not more than 4 carbon atoms and R1 is an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl, aryl or alkaryl radical, is cold drawn into a shaped article such as a fibre, film or tube. Itaconates specified are dimethyl, diethyl, dipropyl, dibutyl, diphenyl, di-isopropyl, di-isobutyl, dihexyl and ditolyl itaconates. An acrylic ester such as ethyl acrylate may also be added to the monomeric mixture. The polymerization may be carried out in any known way. In aqueous media, starch acetate, polyvinyl alcohol or polymethacrylic acid may be present with a polymerization catalyst, of which ozonides, barium and sodium peroxides, acetyl, lauryl, stearyl, benzoyl, toluyl, p-chlorbenzoyl, p-nitrobenzoyl, acetone, triacetone, hydrogen, diethyl and ethyl hydrogen peroxides, aluminium chloride, perborates, persulphates and perchlorates, acetyl benzoyl peroxide and cobalt and manganese resinates, linoleates and maleates are specified.
