Abstract

596,240. Turrets. PENNSYLVANIA MANUFACTURING CO. March 1, 1945, No. 5094. Convention date, Jan. 27, 1944. [Class 83 (iii)] [Also in Group XXX] A rotary work carrier comprises a rotary dial having a circular row of pins and an oscillating lever adapted intermittently to be moved bodily forward to engage the pins and so rotate the dial. The upper end 4 of a driven shaft 3 projects into a frame or casing 1 and forms a seating for a fixed pintle 5 which carries at its upper end the dial 2 and at its lower end cam members 7 and 8 which are rotated from the shaft 3 by means of pins 13. The dial carries a circular row of depending pins 18 concentric with the axis of shaft 3 and pintle 5 and also a circular row of work-holding sockets 62. Bores 9 and 11 supply lubricant to the various bearing surfaces of the pintle and shaft. Mounted on the frame below the dial is a lever 19 with a rectangular aperture 22 into which slidingly fits a block 23 mounted on the pintle 5. By means of springs 26 engaging the ends of a pin 24 passing through the block 23, the lever 19 is urged in a radially outwards direction so that a recess 50 at the outer end will engage one of the dial pins 18. The lever is given an oscillatory motion by means of a shaft 28 having at its lower end an angularly adjustable arm 27 with a roller 36 depending into a groove 17 in the cam 8 and at its upper end an arm 29 with a number of apertures such as 34, 35 into one of which projects a pin 33 depending from a block 32 in a recess on the underside of the lever. The amplitude of oscillation may be varied by engaging the pin 33 in various of the holes 34, 35. During its movement in one direction, the lever engages a pin 18 and rotates the dial. It is then retracted by means of the cam 7, lever 43, shaft 42, lever 45 and roller 46 so that it performs an idle return movement and then again moves forward to engage another pin 18. During the idle return movement, the dial is locked against rotation by means of a latch 21 with a recessed outer end 52 which is advanced to engage a pin 18 by a spring 61 under the control of the outer cam surface of the disc 8 which operates a roll 55, arm 54, shaft 53 and arm 56 which is bifurcated to engage recesses 58 in the latch pin. Various operations may be performed on the workpieces carried in the sockets 62 while the dial is stationary during the idle return movement of the lever 19 and the cam groove 17 may be so shaped that the idle movement is slower than the dial-rotating movement in order to allow time for the operations. As an example, the apparatus may be used for conveying shell casings, which are placed into the sockets 62, past stations at which percussion elements and pin and cap elements are inserted.
