Abstract
596,127. Grinding pointed articles. WINGFIELD, E. M. July 19, 1945, No. 18575. [Class 60] In a grinding-apparatus for shaping or sharpening the points of articles such as arbors, and pivot pins, the article is held in a rotary chuck 19 for presentation to a grinding disc 12, the finished point being either conical or conoidal according to whether the article is applied with stationary axis to the disc 12, or is moved in an arcuate path across the disc during the grinding. The disc 12 may be a grindstone or is provided with a rubber face against which discs of emery paper are clamped by a nut and washer. It is carried on a shaft 7 against which bears a spring 25 to resist the pressure of the work on the disc. Rotation is effected by a handle 8 and shaft 6 through gearing 10, 11, the shaft 6 carrying a disc 9 with a bevelled edge which engages a disc 20 slidably feathered on the shaft 18 carrying the chuck 19. A spring 21 maintains driving contact between the discs 9, 20. The shaft 18 is journalled in a sleeve 17 having a ball end for accommodation in a socket 16 mounted in a slide 13 adjustable longitudinally on the base 1 on which it is clamped by screws 14. The sleeve 17 may rest against a plate 22 which is adjustably clamped by a screw and nut 23, 24. The disc 12 may remain stationary during grinding.
