Abstract
Chlorine dioxide in a state of dilution with carbon dioxide is generated by reacting carbon dioxide with an inorganic chlorite, e.g., sodium or calcium chlorite, in the presence of water vapour. The concentration of the chlorine dioxide is controlled by regulating the rate at which the carbon dioxide is brought into contact with the chlorite. The water vapour and carbon dioxide may be premixed prior to contacting the chlorite and the rate at which the mixture contacts the chlorite exceeds the rate at which the carbon dioxide will react the chlorite. The carbon dioxide may be obtained by the sublimation of solid carbon dioxide, which is particularly suitable where the chlorine dioxide is applied to the sterilization of food in conjunction with the refrigeration thereof.ALSO:Food is sterilized, especially during refrigeration where solid carbon dioxide is used as a refrigerant, by a carbon dioxide-chlorine dioxide mixture (see Group III).
