Abstract

Motor or aviation fuel is obtained from the C4 fractions obtained from oil distillation and stabilization or cracking by first forming a product consisting of diisobutylene and triisobutylene by submitting the fractions to the cold acid polymerization process described in Specification 472,463 in which the material is contacted with cold sulphuric acid and the acid extract is polymerized by heat and forming a second product by treating the unreacted hydrocarbons to isomerize normal butene to isobutene and polymerizing the product, and subjecting the mixture of the first and second products to hydrogenation and fractionation to yield isooctane and isododecanes. A portion of the unreacted hydrocarbons leaving the second polymerizing stage is recycled to the isomerization stage to convert butylene to isobutylene and the butane and isobutane are dehydrogenated to butylene and isobutylene.
