Abstract

Furfuryl alcohol or polyfurfuryl alcohol obtained by heating furfuryl alcohol with an acidic catalyst such as boron fluoride, is mixed with sulphur or a sulphur containing vulcanization agent and heated. Polyvinyl butyral may be added either to the composition or prior to polymerization. Volatile solvents such as ethyl ether may be added. Dithiocarbonates, zinc benzothiazole sulphide, zinc oxide and carbon black may be used in vulcanizing. The products may be moulded or the composition may be used as a coating and then heated.
