[Class 83 (iii)] [Also in Group VI] A dental and locking device for a dental burr-drill of the type in which the shank of the burr is provided with a flat part corresponding to a flat part of a driving member and also with a circular or part circular groove in which at least one releasable locking element engages, comprises a head mounted in the body of the drill for endwise movement relatively to the body, a shoulder on the burr adapted to engage with the driving member, or a part associated therewith, to limit the longitudinal movement of the burr, and locking elements engaging in the groove under spring action, pressure on the head causing inward movement thereof, which causes the withdrawal of the locking elements from the groove. In Fig. 1, a flat part of the driving shaft 1 engages the flat part of the burr of which the groove is engaged by a spring jaw 5. The jaw is disengaged by the action of a shoulder 12 on a bearing 11, when this and the attached sleeve 8 are pressed inwardly against the action of a spring 10. Several spring jaws may be used, each being spaced at a different distance from the shoulder 4. Alternatively, the jaws may be formed by a split sleeve in, for example, six segments, the drive being effected by a flat key firmly attached to the driving shaft. In Fig. 5, a cylinder 37. longitudinally retained by pin 36, is formed with a flange 40 engaging the groove under the influence of a spring 38. Pressure on the bearing 42 is transmitted by a collar 47 to a conical part 41, whereby a cylinder 37 is centralised to allow release of the burr. Holes 48, 49, are provided in the cylinder wall to eliminate vibrations otherwise produced by the eccentricity. The upper surface of the flange 40 is preferably not perpendicular to the axis.
