Abstract

592,578. Discharge apparatus. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Inc. March 9, 1944, No. 4446. Convention date, Dec. 11, 1941. [Class 39 (i)] In high - frequency electrical discharge apparatus in which a stream of charged particles is projected through an oscillating electric field to cause bunching and is then passed through an energy abstraction region, the length of the energy input region and the operating potentials are such that the particles, when their velocity is not varied by the oscillatory field, traverse the region in a time corresponding to one or more complete cycles of oscillation of the electric field. This reduces noise distortion in the apparatus. The electron stream passes from a thermionic cathode 12 through grids G1 and G2 defining the input space and grids G3 and G4 defining the output space. A drift space S is provided between these regions though substantial bunching occurs in the input region. The resonators 30 and 32 associated with the input and output spaces have tuning pistons 31 and 33. The output gap G3 and G4 may be short and maintained at a high potential. The collecting electrode 24 is maintained at a low potential to avoid overheating. An accelerating electrode may be provided between the cathode and the first grid, and the succeeding grids may be replaced by cylindrical electrodes. Specifications 523,712 and 528,041 are referred to.
