[Class 20 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXII] Relates to the joining of frame members of structures, such as the frame members of a vehicle body or of a building, and resides in a method of joining together in the same plane two or more frame members 1, 2 each having two channel portions disposed base to base to form an H-section, the method consisting in interposing between the opposed channel bases of each member a gusset plate 5 which occupies the entire area of intersection bounded by the sides of one member 2 and imaginary continuations of the sides of the other members 1 and which includes a web portion which spans the angle between the connected members, and securing said gusset plate to said channel bases. In the example shown, each frame member is fabricated from two channel bases 3 having their bases bonded together by welding, brazing or otherwise, except where they are separated in the region of the joint for the reception of the gusset plate 5. The side plates 4 are bonded to the sides of the channel members, and are slotted as at 6 to allow the gusset plate 5 to pass through them. The gusset plate 5 may be welded to the crossing member 2 before assembly, the protruding portion of the plate subsequently being riveted to the members 1, 1. Rivet holes may be previously formed in the protruding portions of the gusset plates and in the channel bases of the frame members to which they are to be secured, the holes being positioned to coincide when the frame members are in their properly related positions. The invention is applicable to a joint of X form with the members crossing at any angle, to a T-joint and to a simple angle joint. The invention is also applicable to frame members drawn from metal tubing to have the cross-sectional form of a letter H having double flanges and a double web, the gusset plate being received in the hollow space in the web; and the invention applies to solid frame members of H-section slotted right through from side to side, the slot passing centrally through the thickness of the web. Framework units may be built up by joining frame members according to the invention, with portions of the gusset plates protruding for connection to other such units. The H-section members can be filled with wood or other fibrous material 11 for use as a base for fixing a cover.
