Abstract

592,015. Electron discharge apparatus. PHILLIPS, H. A. DE. Feb. 5, 1945, No. 2876. Convention date, Jan. 15, 1944. [Class 39 (i)] An electron discharge tube for emitting electrons into the space outside the tube is characterised by an electron transmitting window comprising a thin electrical non- conductor, preferably lead glass, and a sheetshaped accelerating electrode provided with a plurality of apertures support ing the thin glass from the inside and preferably sealed to it. In Fig. 1, the sheet 16 of lead glass less than one-thousandth of an inch thick is supported against atmospheric pressure by the accelerating metal grid or perforated plate electrode 18 made from an alloy of nickel, iron and chromium with traces of cobalt so that it may be sealed to the glass. In one method of preparing the window, a very thin glass bulb is blown and contacted with the heated support placed in position in the open end of the tube. In Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), the invention is illustrated as applied to the bottom of a cup-shaped re-entrant portion of the end wall of the tube, and to a window in a glass flow tube passing through the discharge vessel and used for the irradiation of fluids by electrons.
