Abstract

591,859. Cooling liquids. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. June 6, 1944, No. 10887. Convention date, June 30, 1943. [Class 29] [Also in Groups VI and XVIII] Apparatus for dispensing a cold, mixed, carbonated beverage through a valve 20 comprises a tank 10 at atmospheric pressure containing the water component of the beverage, which is directly cooled by the evaporator 32 of a refrigerating machine and circulated by an agitator 35 around an immersed carbonator 45 and syrup receptacles 40 to cool them. The tank 10 is insulated and enclosed in a cabinet 15 which also contains a cup magazine 16, carbon dioxide bottle 21, water filter 22 and the compressor-condenser unit 23, 24 of the refrigerating machine. The syrup receptacles 40 have filling caps 43 projecting through the cover 13 of the tank 10 and syrup pumps 51 connected by pipes 53 with syrup valves 52. The evaporator 32 is connected by a capillary tube 33 to the condenser 24. The agitator 35 is driven through a shaft 37 by a motor 36 supported on the cover 13 of the tank, and the evaporator is surrounded by a baffle 65 so that the cooled water is circulated around the syrup receptacles and carbonator. Water is fed to the tank through the filter 22 and a pipe 30 controlled by a float valve, and on insertion of a coin or turning of a lever or knob a cup 19 is positioned under the valve 20 and a motor-driven pump 47 is started to feed cooled water from the tank through a pipe 48 to the carbonator, which is connected by a pipe 50 with the carbon dioxide botle 21. A solenoid operates the valve 20 and carbonated water flows to the cup 19 and through a conduit 61 to the syrup pumps which are of the diaphragm type operated by the pressure of the carbonated water. A selected syrup valve 52 is operated to supply the syrup to the cup through a pipe 54 the other syrup pumps discharging back to the syrup receptacles 40. After a predetermined time the valves are closed and the pump stopped. The compressor motor is controlled by a thermostat in the tank and the circulator 35 is driven only when the compressor is operating.
