[Class 83 (iii)] In a milling-cutter, reamer, broaching-tool, &c. a helical cutting-member 15, Fig. 1, is formed from sectional tool-steel coiled upon a tapered part 12 of the body 11. End rings 20, 21 provided with spanner flats are screwed on the body at 13, 14 to secure the cutter and adjust its diameter. The shank 12a is formed with flats 12b for connection to driving-mechanism. In a modification, the helix is spaced by the inclusion, between the turns, of a strip of smaller section. The rear ring 21 may carry a finger coacting with graduations on the shank 12a. In another form, a shank 26, Fig. 3, is screwed to carry one end ring 36 and its ends are reduced in diameter and screwed into a driving adaptor 40 and a conical member 27 carrying a split sleeve 32 and the other end ring 31. The cutter 37 is coiled on the sleeve 32 with an interposed strip 38. As applied to a milling-cutter, four strips 54, Fig. 6, of the section shown are coiled on a split sleeve 51 mounted on a taper sleeve 42, keyed to the arbor 41 and secured by end nuts 47, 48. Screwed rings 55, 56 on the sleeve 42 effect the diameter adjustment. The connection for the actuating end of a pull or push broach is illustrated. The final turns of the cutter strip may be left unground to provide a burnishing effect.
