Abstract
Polymers or copolymers of vinyl chloride, or compositions thereof, are stabilized against thermal decomposition by the addition of a dialkyl di-alkoxy compound of tin, lead or germanium, in which the alkyl radicals are such that the corresponding di-alkyl dichloride of the metal is soluble in the polyvinyl chloride. Specified stabilizers are dibutyl tin dimethoxide, dibutyl tin dibutoxide, dibutyl tin diethoxide and dibutyl tin (or lead) dioctoxide. Examples copolymers are those of vinyl chloride with ethyl maleate, vinyl acetate and vinylidene chloride. The stabilizer may be added prior to, during or after polymerization. Plasticizers such as dibutyl phthalate and methyl glycol phthalate may be present in the compositions which may be formed into transparent sheets. The preparation of dibutyl tin dibutoxide is given: butyl magnesium bromide is reacted with an ethereal solution of tin tetra-bromide and the dibutyl tin dibromide formed is reacted in situ with sodium butoxide. If desired, one of the products of decomposition of the stabilizer, e.g. the alcohol, may be removed by volatilization.
