Abstract

A betaine or a salt or ester-salt thereof is converted, in the presence of a solvent or inert diluent into the salt of its acid halide or anhydride by means of agents known to be capable of converting carboxylic acids into the corresponding halides and anhydrides such as halides of phosphorus and sulphur, chlorosulphonic acid or phosgene. In examples, betaine hydrochloride is treated with phosphorus pentachloride in the presence of acetyl chloride, and trimethyl-a - and also b -propiobetaine hydrochloride and betaine hydrochloride are treated with phosphoruspentachloride in the presence of phosphorusoxychloride. Other starting materials mentioned are: trialkylbutyrobetaines, cyclopentamethylenealkylacetobetaine, the trimethylbetaine of p-aminocinnamic acid and their salts and ester-salts. According to the reaction conditions any of the following solvents may be used: benzene, chloroform, dioxane, carboxylic halides and phosphorusoxychloride. Metal halides may be used as catalysts. Specification 546,613 is referred to.
