Abstract

A sealing and impregnating composition for electric cables comprises a suspension of 100 parts of polymerized vinyl chloride in 60 to 150 parts of plasticiser, the plasticiser being a mixture of a major amount of di-(2-ethyl-hexyl) phthalate and a second plasticiser of less compatibility. The vinyl chloride resin is of high molecular weight and may be a copolymer of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate, vinyl propionate, methyl acrylate, butyl acrylate, acrylonitrile, or vinylidine chloride and maleate esters. The resin may also be mixed with another compatible plasticiser such as dicapryl phthalate, tri-(2-ethyl-hexyl) maleate or tricresyl phosphate, and also with one of limited compatibility such as methyl cyclohexyl stearate, methoxyethyl oleate, acetylated castor oil, acetylated polymerized castor oil, or the methyl ester of polymerized ricinoleic acids. The resin may be stabilized by litharge, basic lead carbonate, lead stearate, lead oleate or basic lead sulphate, and the flame resistance may be increased by adding antimony oxide.
