[Class 39 (iii)] [Also in Group XIV] Hair is permanently curled or straightened by subjecting it to a highfrequency electric field between electrodes mounted on the handle of a hair curler or comb, the handle holding a transformer or inductance coil to apply - a stepped-up voltage to the electrode. Hair may be moistened, wound on an inner electrode comprising a detachable metal rod 3 covered with glass, and then enclosed by an outer electrode 4 comprising a split metal tube with a hinged part 4a. The rod 3 has a plug 9 engaging a terminal 10 on the handle 1. Through the rear of the handle carrying the electrodes passes a cable 2 from a high frequency generator. The handle encloses a transformer or an induction coil 5 and condenser 6 connected in series across the cable conductors 2. The electrodes are connected across the condenser 6 by conductors 7, 8, the outer electrode 4 being earthed. The circuit in the handle forms a series resonant circuit tuned to the frequency of the generator and steps up the voltage applied to the electrodes. Hair may be straightened by a comb 12 of insulating material with conducting wires 13 in the teeth connected alternately to one of two conductors 14, 15 of a high frequency supply, the hair being subjected to dielectric heating while .held straight.
