Abstract
To avoid distortion &c. during manufacture, composite metal articles such as electric contacts, spark-gap electrodes, X-ray targets, sparking-plug electrodes, welding electrodes &c. consist of facings wholly or mainly of tungsten, brazed or welded to a backing member having similar expansion characteristics and consisting of 60 to 95 per cent. tungsten, 2.5 to 20 per cent. nickel and the remainder of copper and/or molybdenum; either of the last two ingredients being replaceable wholly or in part by gold. Up to 1 per cent. of cobalt, manganese and iron may also be added. In making the backing, the particles are ball milled for about 48 hours, mixed with a resin binder, screened through a 90 mesh sieve, pressed into discs large enough to allow for about 20 per cent. shrinkage, and heated to a temperature sufficient to volatilize the binder. The discs are then pushed further into the furnace for heating to the sintering temperature of 1,000 DEG C. for about 20 minutes. During heating the discs are placed on an alundum slab in a carbon boat with alundum sand between the discs and the slab to facilitate movement due to shrinkage during sintering.
