Abstract

589,618. Mandrels. INTERNATIONAL COMBUSTION, Ltd., and JAMES, E. R. Dec. 5, 1944, No. 24289. [Class 83 (iii)] A mandrel for use in machining articles of circular cross-section in which the workpiece is shrunk on to the mandrel, comprises an incomplete body portion a and a number of complementary non-adjustable wedge members b secured around the mandrel to present a smooth unbroken surface, means being provided for disengaging the wedge members after a working operation. The wedge members, of which two are provided in the example shown are temporarily secured to the body by means of dove-tail recesses and by additional means such as set-screws (not shown). Their withdrawal is initiated by rotating the screws c which screw into the wedge members and engage plates d. Plugs e with centre holes are secured in the ends of the mandrel.
