Abstract

589,189. Aircraft jet - propulsion. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. March 16, 1945, No. 6742. Convention date, March 20, 1944. [Class 110 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXIII] The exhaust of a gas turbine is led by a pipe 35 to the throat of a venturi 37 forming the entrance to a jet-propulsion tube 38. The open mouth is directed up-stream. Further air is drawn in at injector tubes 45. A mixture of air and exhaust gases is extracted at the pressure region of the venturi through openings 43 and provides the input for the centrifugal compressor 4 of the power unit. The compressed gases pass through a bladed diffussor 10 to a circular assembly of combustion chambers 18 and thence to a turbine 12. The turbine and compressor rotors are mounted on a shaft 1 supported by two ball bearings in a casing 2. Oil is supplied to the bearings by a pump through a pipe 31 and is drawn off by another pump through a pipe 33. The burners are supplied with fuel through a ring pipe 25 from a pump 27. Two power units may be mounted one on each side of an aircraft fuselage ; the jet tube being at the side of the compressor turbine assembly and enclosed in a tubular fairing having an air scoop for entraining air for the injector tubes 45.
