Abstract

589,100. Bearings. TAREX SOC. ANON. Feb. 21, 1945, No. 4366. Convention date, May 26, 1944. [Class 12 (i)] A plain journal bearing with an intermediate bush rotated in the same direction as the journal by means of a transmission from the journal has one at least of the surfaces of such bush made of conical form and means are provided for axially adjusting such bush relative to its co-operating fixed bush. An epicyclic gear or the slower running cage of a ball bearing may be used for the drive transmission from the shaft to the bush. A hollow shaft 4 runs in an intermediate bush 5 having a conical exterior co-operating with an internally cored fixed bush 3 secured in the support housing 1 by a nut 2. The shaft is located axially by a collar 8 held between a ball thrust bearing 6 butting on the fixed bush 3 and a flanged sleeve nut 9 screwed on to fixed bush 3. The intermediate bush 5 has at the broader end a flange 22 which is apertured to act as a ball cage for the balls 21 which bear against the end of the fixed bush 3 and are caused to revolve around the same by a member 10 keyed on the shaft and having a spring- urged sleeve 17 to press on the balls 21. It will be appreciated that the ball cage formed by the flange of the intermediate bush will rotate at half the journal speed and accordingly a ball thrust bearing 7 is provided between the member 10 and the end face of the intermediate bush 5. Wear between the bushes is taken up by adjusting the member 10 axially by means of nut 11. A modification is described in which the intermediate bush is rotated by an epicyclic gear comprising pinions on the bush which roll around an internally toothed rim of the fixed outer bush. The shaft journal of this modification has a cone bush thereon and the intermediate rotated bush is therefore conical on both its interior and exterior Figs, 2 and 3 (not shown). The rotated bush 5 may be of bronze with the shaft 4 and fixed bush 3 of hardened steel.
