Abstract

588,707. Discharge lamps, SOC. POUR, LES APPLICATIONS DE L'ELECTRICITE ET DES GAZ RARES-ETABLISSEMENTS CLAUDE-PAZ & SILVA. March 11, 1939, No. 7938. Convention date, March 25, 1938. Drawings to Specification. [Class 39 (i)] Discharge lamps having a main filling of rare gas such as neon, and an auxiliary gas or vapour serving to facilitate starting, but not taking part in the steady light emission, such as xenon, krypton, argon or mercury, contain an absorbent substance laden with the auxiliary gas or vapour, which is slowly liberated during periods of rest. The auxiliary filling is cleaned up during the first few, seconds of starting and the rate, of liberation from the absorbent substance is kept lower than the rate of clean up, so that there is no appreciable atmosphere of auxiliary filling during operation. Suitable substances are activated carbon, alumina, silica gel or an amalgam formed by fusing 10 per cent of zinc or tin with mercury. The substance may be placed in the exhaust tube, in a perforated glass ball within the tube, or even on a cool part of an electrode. Carbon containing xenon may be contained in a side tube communicating with the main tube through a narrow opening made by breaking a fine point, by a steel ball or by high-frequency heating, after sealing.
