Abstract
588,507. Fastenings for parachute loads. COOPER, D. W. Feb. 26, 1945, No. 4649. [Class 44] [Also in Group XXXIII] A fastening for parachute-borne loads, automatically released on alighting, comprises a chain f threaded through rings g or shackles carried by the rigging lines (not shown) of the parachute, or a number of parachutes, as described in Specification 582,800, one end (or both ends) of the chain being connected to a link device by a pin which is ejected to effect release by an explosive charge or mechanically. If desired the chain links may be formed so that the chain is flexible in one direction to form a loop as shown, but in the other cannot be flexed beyond a straight or bar-like position. As shown, both ends of the chain are releasable, but one may be permanently connected if desired. The chain ends are attached by pins h to a link device comprising parallel plates a connected by bolts b and spaced by blocks c, the lower block having a swivel-eye c<1> for the shank d of a shackle e to which the load is attached. The pins h have hollow cylindrical heads h<1> to which explosive charges i are secured, and the heads may slidably enclose fixed cylindrical members k to confine the explosive gases until the pins are sufficiently ejected. The pins may be held against accidental release by shear wires j, and against loss by flexible connections l. Firing is effected electrically over leads m and contact-rings n. The circuit may be closed by a pendulum controlled or impact switch, or in the case of alighting on water current may be supplied by a water-actuated cell or battery controlled by immersion switch. Alternatively ejection of the pin (or pins) may be mechanical and an arrangement is described using a bellcrank lever, one arm of which engages under the pin-head, the other arm being actuated by a pendulum or impact device.
