Abstract

588,120. Electron microscopes. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Jan. 30, 1945, No. 2367. Convention date, Feb. 1, 1944. [Class 39 (i)] An electron microscope has a viewing screen 13, Fig. 1, comprising a thin layer of alkali halide, e.g. potassium chloride, crystals. For viewing purposes a beam of light 30, preferably monochromatic and of the same colour as the image, is projected on to the window 12, the reflected beam being magnified by a suitable lens system 31. The image is.erased by means of an auxiliary electron beam disposed in a side arm 11, In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the image is viewed by transmitted light of a complementary colour. In this instance, the image may be erased by 'applying a potential difference between two thin semitransparent films of aluminium deposited on each side of the screen. The erasure may be accelerated by means of a heating coil disposed in a glass wall portion of the tube adjacent the screen. Alternatively, the image may be erased by infra-red rays.
