588,076. Foldable chairs. COMPACTIBLE FURNITURE, Ltd., HUTCHISON, C. A., STEBBING, W. J., and SUMNER, W. Jan. 29, 1945, No. 2247. [Class 52 (ii)] A foldable chair comprises two side frames 1, 2, each including a series of struts 3, 4, 5, 6 pivoted together at 7, 8, 9, 10 to form a lazy tongs which is foldable in the plane of the side frame, means for connecting the side' frames and supporting them in upright spaced relationship when the chair is erected, and a backrest and seating surface conjointly formed of a length of flexible material slung between cross members attached. to the upper part of the back and to side frame struts at the front of the chair. The frames 1, 2 are connected together by the pivotally mounted, foldable cross struts 11, 12, which are each formed in two parts pivoted together in overlapping relation at 13 and provided with stops 14, and by the foldable strut 17 hinged at 18 and with a similar stop 14. Tubular members 19 mounted on the upper ends of the struts 3 form sockets 20 which receive the lower ends of extension members 21. Pins 24 in the upper ends of extensions 21 and struts 6 receive detachable cross bars 22, 23 between which the canvas seat 25 is slung. The cross bar 22 is provided with a handle 26 attached by tacks 27 and having tying cords 28 by which the collapsed chair may be tied up and transported. In a modification a separate cover which also serves as an awning is provided.
