Abstract

An o : o -dihalogenalkylene having 2 or 3 carbon atoms is condensed with a heterocyclic compound containing a tertiary nitrogen atom and a methyl group in a -position thereto; whereby a quaternary ammonium halide is formed which may be converted into a salt having a different anion, e.g. a perchlorate. The products are intermediates for the manufacture of dyestuffs. In examples: (1) trimethylene bromide is condensed with 2-methylbenzthiazol and with 2-methyl-3 : 4-benzobenzthiazol; (2) ethylenebromide is condensed with 2-methyl-3 : 4-benzobenzthiazol. Selenazol, pyridine and thiazol are mentioned as heterocyclic nitrogen compounds whose a -methyl derivatives may be used as starting materials. Specification 615,205 is referred to. A sample has been furnished under Sect. 2 (5) of a product obtained from ethylene dibromide and 2 : 5-dimethyl-1 : 3 : 4-thiodiazol.
