Abstract

Triptane is prepared by reacting a highly-branched (i.e. having more than one side chain) C7 aliphatic olefin or a C7 olefinic fraction consisting predominantly of such olefins with an isoparaffin and an alkylation catalyst under alkylation conditions. The C7 olefins and isobutane may be treated in the usual alkylation plant with jet or turbo-mixers and recirculation of the emulsion to give an external isoparaffin to olefin ratio of at least 10 : 1, preferably 15-25 : 1, an internal ratio of 200-500 : 1, and a contact time of at least 20, preferably 60, mins., the catalyst being, for example, 88-98 per cent sulphuric acid at a temperature of 35-55 DEG F. Other catalysts specified are hydrofluoric acid of at least 80 per cent, at 90-130 DEG F., AlCl3 or its complexes, at 50-130 DEG F., and ClSO3H or FSO3H, at 0 to -50 DEG F. The emulsion is passed to a separator from which acid is returned, and the hydrocarbon layer washed and fractionated to recover isobutane, which is recycled, and alkylate of gasoline boiling range containing triptane. In Examples, 2, 3, 3-trimethylbutene-1 or 2,3-dimethylpentene-2 are treated with isobutane and 90-98 per cent sulphuric acid at 35 DEG F. and sufficient pressure to maintain the liquid phase.
