Abstract

Anti-corrosion compositions for use in displacing water, particularly sea water, from metal surfaces, and in protecting such surfaces, particularly iron, steel, copper, aluminium and brass surfaces, from corrosion, comprise major proportions of hydrocarbon oils having initial boiling points of not less than 50 DEG C. and final boiling points not exceeding 370 DEG C. and minor proportions of oil-soluble wetting agents, oily or fatty protective agents and spreading agents. The spreading agents are non-cyclic aliphatic alcohols containing from four to eight carbon atoms in the molecule, such as diacetone alcohol or butyl alcohol, while protective agents mentioned are heavy hydrocarbon oil, asphaltic bitumen, bright stocks with polar additives, lanolin, woolgrease which may be neutralized with oxides, hydroxides or carbonates of sodium, potassium, calcium or magnesium, and glycerides such as glyceryl mono-oleate. Suitable wetting agents are the soaps of petroleum acids such as sodium naphtha sulphonates or the alkali salts of sulphated fatty alcohols such as the sodium salts of sulphated C8-C19 alcohols, and the hydrocarbon oils forming the basis of the composition may be petroleum naphtha, kerosine or white spirits. In the examples, compositions are described consisting of (1) petroleum naphtha, sodium naphtha sulphonate, lanolin and diacetone alcohol, (2) petroleum naphtha, sodium naphtha sulphonate, soda-neutralized wool grease, glyceryl monooleate and diacetone alcohol and (3) kerosine sodium naphtha sulphonate, lanolin and diacetone alcohol. The Provisional Specification mentions soaps of fatty acids, for example oleates as wetting agents, natural waxes and esters as protective agents and alcohols containing not more than 19 carbon atoms, for example methyl cyclohexanol, as spreading agents.
