Abstract

586,654. Bee-hives. WREN, D. K. Oct. 13, 1944, No. 19839. [Class 5 (ii)] A beehive comprises one or more chambers placed end to end, each symmetrical and reversible about a central plane, an apertured screen being placed at each end of each chamber. Frames consist of flanged rings with a wax foundation 23 clamped between them. If a synthetic resin is used the rings and foundation may be formed as an integer. Sector-shaped section boxes 28 may be fitted within each flange, each box being formed from a strip of thin wood or synthetic material. An axial nut and bolt with washers may hold the assembly together. Such frames are mounted within chambers, Fig. 7, the upper half of which is removable from or hinged to the lower half. Recessed. longitudinal racks 40 are mounted in the base and sides of the lower part of the chamber. A resilient strip 45 in the upper part prevents movement. To each end of the chamber is fixed a plate having two sectorshaped openings, and pivoted on each end-plate is a disc, Fig. 11, having sector-shaped openings 58 and apertures 52, 54, 56 of differing size. Several chambers arranged in series to form a hive are closed at each end by plates containing only flight and ventilation holes. The chambers may be of rectangular section, and instead of rotary end plates, interchangeable plates may be provided.
