Abstract

586,183. Moulding hollow articles from resins, cellulose derivatives, &c. CLARK, C. W. Dec. 18, 1945, No. 23708/44. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group XXVIII] A method of moulding a gas container (see Group XXVIII) of reinforced plastic material comprises winding the reinforcement, which may be of wire or other open work metal, in two separate parts 1, 2, Fig. 3, which are telescoped to form a cylindrical cage of less diameter than the finished container. A thick walled tube 5 of thermoplastic material such as a cellulose derivative and having a collar 4 keyed to one end is inserted in the cage and the assembly placed in a two part mould having channels 8 through which is passed steam or water according to the setting of a cock 9. Channels 12 lead to atmosphere. A pipe 13 supplies compressed air to the heated mould to force the plastic material into the interstices of the reinforcement material. In a modification, the tube 5 is replaced by two pellets of thermo-setting composition such as a synthetic resin mixed with a suitable filler the abutting ends of which pellets overlap. In a further modification the reinforcement is supported by a two-part metal lining 16, 17, Fig. 5, supported internally by a pair of collapsable arms 18. Plastic is injected into the mould by a piston 26.
